This
area features marked geographic contrasts, from
the Salinas Grandes and the plains, to the
Sierra and Pampa de Pocho, with its
volcanoes and the Túneles. Apart from
this rich natural heritage, there are significant
cultural attractions, such as the paintings of Charquina,
a series of chapels dating back to the 18th century
(San Marcos Sierra, Salsacate, Pocho, Las Palmas)
and the outstanding Jesuit Estancia of La Candelaria.
There
we have San Marcos Sierra with its splendid environmental
quality, Cruz del Eje with its Great Dam,
the Guasapampa hill, and the archeological site
of Charquina, Pocho with the unique combination
of its pampa, volcanoes, lakes and palm trees, and finally,
the magnificent tunnels and natural reserve of Chancaní,
with its dense group of quebracho forests (hardwood trees
found in the North of Argentina).
